this goes also to the folder How to pick a gorgeous song and re-make it even better. and to the folder Songs that you get never tired of. and to the Vintage Corner one.
i had saw him playing the kora on a video, and he’d charm me. but no album was out so I forgot the magic of his music. Then I stumbled onto one of his song again (on Stereomood maybe) and here it is, the new album: Humbling Tides. Stunning.
Unknown to me till she made that duet with Björk, which I’m very fond of (both, the duet and Björk). Not to be mistaken for her fellow-countryman Ólafur Arnalds (a relative?). I think of her as the Icelandic Johanna Newsom, for her way of singing, mostly. I’m just starting to discover her music, and loving it.
Today I’m showing you 1:02mn of pure beauty. I can’t embed 2 videos in a single post, so I had to choose my favorite and it’s this one. Open your eyes, 1:02mn is very short. But wow, the girls from CocoRosie are really amazing when it’s about to create video clips of their songs. I do love the video for Lemonade, and here I really can’t wait for the full video of Smokey Taboo.
To hear the full song, here’s the link (sorry again that I can’t put the Youtube video directly) :
“Smokey Taboo” is from Cocorosie’s album “Grey Oceans”, released last May 2010.
“Journeying inward, into the forest-dark ember, led by crystal light, the voicing of whales and ancient souls passed, we embarked; slipping with muddy foothold, on a destination-less ride through darkened waters filled with starry-eyed daughters. We have had many guides, some dead ones, some alive, some sisters with names pronounceable, others, just an inkling, the last heat of summer, seeping up, out of the evening sunned soil in September. We close our eyes, to hear the decoration, a burnt out corn field, a sad place to remember, the story of a heartless crow, his countless cackles haunting, his mission, misogyny. We dual waves, heavy laden with salt, of foisted female identity, underlying, trinity is crying, she mourns so sweetly. Heavy on our hearts, the weight of time; the earth who lost her balance and fell into the snowy depths of industrial mucus.” ~CocoRosie
as already said several times in other posts here, aussies do it better. Sarah Blasko was a surprising discovery a few years ago, now she’s a certainty. haven’t listened to the last album yet but the two singles i’ve listened so far (all i want and this no turning back) make me foreseen delights - once again.
this über lovely video was made by the illustrator Celeste Potter.
i love internet for what it makes me discover. this time it was through blip.fm where a fellow blipper suggested this song and - wonders! - added the link where to download the whole EP. free music is always a treat. and it’s not a cheap one! as this record features: Ian Bjornstad, Carla Kihlstedt, Daniel Hart (St. Vincent), Matthias Bossi, George Ban-Weiss, and Ben Goldberg (who plays all the clarinets on “Penthouse Window”). Jim Eno from Spoon produced and engineered “Lay Down.”
their last album is fresh and fun and sad and more. it covers every mood and yesterday i was walking home from the supermarket and there was the sun and i imagined to be in a crowded place where this song would play aloud and all the people would start singing and dancing happily together.
Happy Monday everybody! Do I need to introduce Laura Veirs? I don’t think so. But in case you’ve never heard of her, she’s an American singer-songwriter mostly playing folk music. And she’s just awesome.
Fran & Ju are friends.
Fran lives in Italy, Ju lives in France.
They share the passion for music and arts.
They want a place to save the music they love, to talk about all kind of folk, indie, indie-pop or electro-folk and to remind one another of the new musicians they discover.
So this blog is that place, welcome and enjoy.
